Just one of Mitsubishi's many engineering achievements.
MIVEC, which stands for "Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-Timing Electronic Control system", was first introduced in 1992 in Mitsubishi's 4G9 engine and the first cars to use this system were the Mirage hatchback and Lancer sedan. Its primary function is to vary the timing of the intake and exhaust camshafts, which allows the system to increase power output. Although it was initially developed to enhance performance it has since then been improved and the MIVEC engines of today radically diminish fuel consumption and increase overall efficiency on the vehicles output. The most recent development made on the MIVEC system is that it is now adapting to a continuous variable valve timing engine, which is the first VVT system to be used in a passenger car with a diesel engine.
